This past holiday weekend was spent in Palm Desert with my husband and a few friends. Originally my BFF and her husband were going to join us, but she injured her foot and needed surgery that Friday :(. I was pretty sad because I don’t get to see her as often as I would like (she lives in AZ), but I would rather her rest up and get well at home than try to drive out to Palm Desert and not really be able to do anything (and spend money on it).
Anyway, in the typical Palm Desert way, it was basically too hot to do anything. We made the tragic mistake of going to the Living Desert Zoo on Sat around 10 til a little past noon. While the zoo itself it actually really cool, it was SOOO hot that most of the animals didn’t even want to come out, and I thought I was going to pass out from heat exhaustion (and I’m normally the one that LOVES the heat). We actually spent quite a bit of time in their discovery center (which typically is for kids), but it had air conditioning. Here’s little slideshow of what we saw:
There was actually a LOT more animals than this (zebras, giraffes, camels, etc…), but I either couldn’t get a good picture because I couldn’t zoom enough, or they were all running around and I couldn’t get a non-blurry photo. I honestly wish I could have stayed longer, but the heat was just killing us and the poor animals didn’t seem too thrilled by it either. Don’t worry animal lovers, all of the animals had plenty of space, shaded areas to hide in cool off in, not to mention LOTS of water to keep hydrated and cool off in. Some of the enclosures even have misters to help keep them cool.
For the remainder of the trip, we just stayed at the resort, hung out by the pool, had some BBQ, and played board games (mainly Sequence). On the way home, we did swing by the Desert Premium Outlets and Cabazon, but nothing really called my name and I left empty handed (super shocking).
I can’t wait to go back, though. I do love Palm Desert and hanging out there, but I think next time we’ll pick a better time of the year to go. If any of you are Palm Desert / Palm Springs residents (or just frequent visitors), I would LOVE to get some advice on things to do for my next trip out. 🙂
